Pursuing the word is of utmost importance.
Living away from home caused me discomfort. A time where monotonous scheduling I had perfected over several years was thrown out, and everything was refreshingly unfamiliar. Where others weren't expecting me to attend every service, and my relationship with Christ was dependent on us two. As it should be. My intentionality in pursuing the word grew; I did have my roommates to keep me accountable but for the most part it was something I did because I wanted to grow my faith. Something I asked God to let me grow a passion for.
Community is beautiful, it’s establishment is biblical and should be pursued to the fullest degree. That being said, the foundation of that is found throughout the gospel message:
30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[a] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] There is no commandment greater than these.”
Verse thirty is our anchor, love the Lord with all of our heart and soul, while verse thirty-one is a reflection of that love; the consequence is loving our neighbor as ourself, as Christ has done . Our pieces titled Impacto and Comunidad go more into depth, feel welcome to read it. Our truest and purest commandment is to love our Lord, and I believe everything else falls under that.
Now how do we love our Lord-
Through obedience, fasting, tithing, going to every single church event available? I’d say all of these things are ways of loving the Lord and should be pursued, but the most important one is communion; strengthening our interpersonal relationship with Christ.
Communion is referenced to as
the sharing or exchanging of intimate thoughts and feelings, especially when the exchange is on a mental or spiritual level.
the service of Christian worship at which bread and wine are consecrated and shared.
Prayer and reading the word.
That is communion. The root word is communis (latin); where the word common stems from. Something that is prevalent. We love our Lord by having a relationship with Him, by speaking to Him and listening to Him often. Listening does not entail hearing thunder and visualizing light as an angel appears to us and guides us vocally (though that would be amazing), it’s reading Holy scripture. Digesting the word, applying it and sharing it.
- Read a Devo
- Go to your local bible school
- Integrate in a bible study (or make one happen)
- Listen to the word while driving (try out StreetLights bible app)
- Actually take notes when listening to your church pastor (if you haven't integrated in a church, please do so)
- Pursue a theological education
All of these things can help you dive into scripture, and have a better understanding of your faith. Sometimes we forget how important going “back to basics” truly is.
I’ve known Christ for nearly fourteen years. It wasn’t until recently where I fell in love studying the word. Where I understood the importance of taking advantage of the bible institute my church provides and other resources I’ve encountered, where devotionals became more appealing and now necessary for my everyday.
I pray God enlightens you and gives you the grace to grow passionate of His word. It’s the way He communicates with us.
Let us hear him.
